Guyana Oil Company – Providing Verified Measurements of Its Petroleum Products

The Guyana Oil Company Limited (GUYOIL) is the state-owned distributor of petroleum products in Guyana. The company was established forty-seven (47) years ago and retains the title as the largest petroleum distributor in the country, offering reliable measurements of products to its customers. The petroleum company has also expanded its services with the founding of GuyOil Aviation Services Inc. (GASI) to fuel the aviation industry.

The business of GUYOIL includes the importation, storage and marketing of Gasoil or diesel, Gasoline, Kerosene, Heavy Fuel Oil, Motor Accessories, CASTROL Lubricants, Bituminous Products and Aviation Fuel for the Airline Industry. These services all require the use of measurement accuracy to foster and maintain good relations with clients. To ensure there is accuracy in measurement, the company utilises the Verification services of the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS).

As the National Measurement Institute, the GNBS provides the verification of all measuring instruments used in trade. In the petroleum industry, the Bureau verifies thermometers, petrol pumps at the gas stations, bulk meters at the terminals and large capacity test measures used by companies for internal checks. This process is done twice annually during the countrywide verification periods and is geared to protect fuel companies, their retailers and customers.

Communication and Promotion Officer at GuyOil, Saskia McClintock in an interview noted that verification is critical to consumer satisfaction. “It’s important to verify our instruments because not only is it mandated by law, but it protects the company’s reputation and protects consumers,” she noted

McClintock added that using the services of the GNBS removes doubts about the company’s measurements while signalling its commitment to accuracy. She said since using the service of the GNBS, there has not been any complaint about the measurements from consumers.

The Communication and Promotion Officer also lauded the work of the GNBS Inspectors noting that, “the dedicated team, rigorous procedures, and collaborative approach contribute to ensuring accuracy and fairness in measurements within the petroleum industry.”

In addition to offering reliable measurements, the company is working towards getting certified to the ISO 9001 Standard to increase consumer confidence.

GuyOil operates eight company owned and fifty (50) dealer owned gas stations along with three bulk terminals in the Berbice, Demerara and Essequibo counties. At these locations, the company offers wholesale and retail fuel sales inclusive of low sulphur and the ultra-low sulphur Gasoil. It also offers bulk fuel to the transportation sector, retail and wholesale lubricants and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) manufactured by other companies along with heavy fuel oil for the marine industry, aviation fuel and kerosene, among others.

The Bureau on May 20 joins with other National Measurement Institutes (NMI) globally to observe World Metrology Day 2023. As the NMI, the GNBS is mandated to implement the Weights and Measures Act of 1981 to ensure public and private sector organisations use accurate measuring instruments in their daily business activities.
