GNBS – Prepared to Put the Spotlight on Its Calibration Services at Energy Expo 2023

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) offers a range of calibration services to several local companies, testing and medical laboratories to ensure the accuracy and traceability of measurements. The GNBS is anticipating that a large number of these service providers will participate in the Energy Conference and Expo slated for the Guyana Marriott this week, and the Bureau’s Team is prepared to have meaningful engagements with these stakeholders to understand their calibration needs.

The reality today is that many of our local businesses require the calibration of their measuring instruments because they directly or indirectly operate and serve other businesses within the key sectors of our economy including oil and gas, health, mining, building and construction.

In addition, over the last few years, many Guyanese companies have become certified to international standards such as the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Standard, which requires them to have their measurement instruments calibrated as a quality control measure. Calibration is known to be a complex scientific process, which allows traceability in measurements. It compares the accuracy of instruments or equipment with a known and proven measurement standard which is in the custody of the GNBS Industrial Metrology and Testing (IMT) Department. A calibration certificate is provided to clients stating the valid measurement values indicated by their instruments.

For the GNBS, the Energy Expo provides an excellent opportunity for our Team to remind existing and potential clients and stakeholders that our Laboratory is ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Accredited, and that it offers calibration in the areas of Mass, Dimension, Volume, Pressure, Temperature and Torque in industry demanded measurement ranges. Instruments that can be calibrated by the Bureau include balances, masses, measuring cylinders, liquid in glass and infrared thermometers, pressure gauges, micropipettes, torque wrenches, multimeters, micrometers, calipers, and digital multimeters.

Commencing in 2023, the Bureau offers the calibration of rotary/rotating structures and has expanded its scope to calibrate 6 ½ digital multimeters. Previously, the laboratory only calibrated 4 ½ digital multimeters.

For clients that demand the services of the GNBS, they have a vivid understanding of the importance of calibration to their operations and the measurement results they achieve and provide. Consistently knowing the accuracy of measuring instruments gives companies the confidence that they are putting the right amounts of ingredients in their products. This maintains consistency in product quality. Using calibrated instruments also ensures that key parameters such as temperature conditions are maintained to preserve raw materials and maintain the appropriate operational conditions. Meanwhile, inaccurate pressure gauges can result in major unwanted incidents that compromise safety, endanger life and limbs, or cause equipment damage, creating unwanted liabilities.

With its new calibration laboratory under construction, the GNBS is constantly working in its current facility to increase and improve its services to meet the demand for calibration in higher ranges and broader areas. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit their measuring instruments for calibration. Service requests can be made by visiting https://gnbsgy.org/metrology/industrial-metrology/

Ensure that you visit the GNBS booth at the Energy Expo this week and have a conversation with any member of our team regarding your calibration needs. The GNBS continuously strives to address those needs by acquiring the necessary equipment and training its Laboratory Technicians to help businesses achieve measurement accuracy.
