GNBS Places Hold on Non-Complying Cigarettes From Popular Wholesale Importer

The GNBS has placed on hold a consignment of cigarettes branded ‘’US Mild American Blend’’ from importer, A. Wahab Trading, 74 Village Corentyne Berbice.

This is based on recent inspections conducted by GNBS which revealed that these cigarettes fail to comply with labelling and quality requirements outlined in the National Standard GYS 9-3: 2009 Second Revision Specification for the labelling of retail packages of tobacco products and GYS 9-3: 2014- Labelling of tobacco products.

Our Officers of the Product Compliance Services Department will immediately commence countrywide surveillance inspections to prevent such products from getting to the consumers. The public is advised to desist from purchasing cigarettes branded US Mild American Blend.

The GNBS assures Guyanese that we are committed to ensuring items like these are not imported.

How to safeguard yourselves:

  1. Importers, Distributors, Wholesalers, Retailers, and Vendors should not purchase cigarettes which are not meeting labelling and quality requirements into the country for resale purposes and should familiarise themselves with the requirements of GYS 9-3: 2014- Labelling of tobacco products.
  2. Consumers should be vigilant and refrain from purchasing cigarettes that do not meet these requirements.

A copy of this standard is available and can be purchased at the GNBS Standards Information Centre. You can contact 219-0064-66 EXT 231
