Measurement and accuracy are the key foundations of any construction project, from ensuring the right number of materials are ordered to having accurate measurements at the design stages and throughout the project. The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) as the National Metrology (Measurement) Institute (NMI) offers a wide range of calibration services to meet the needs of industry, regulators, and laboratories that are offering measurement services using precision instruments.
For over 15 years, the GNBS has been calibrating instruments used to measure temperature, pressure, dimensions, mass, volume, electricity and torque. Standards used in calibration by our Industrial Metrology and Testing (IMT) Department are traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), PTB Germany and other highly recognized NMIs in the Caribbean.
Calibration is a comparison between a known measurement (the standard) and your instrument. It eliminates inaccurate results and is essential for the quality and safety of both products and services. Uncalibrated instruments may deliver inconsistent data, as such, calibration helps to reduce errors and delivers data on the performance of your instrument.
In the rapidly expanding construction sector, accurate measurements are crucial in ensuring the reliability and accuracy of instruments which include compression machines, calipers, digital multimeters, measuring rules and tapes. Measuring instruments may require regular calibration based on the required accuracy of measurement, frequency of use and condition under which it is used and stored. However, since measuring tapes or rules tend not to change or deform quickly, unless handled improperly, an initial calibration is recommended to determine accuracy.
The construction industry requires calibrated, precise and reliable instruments for projects. Not only does calibration ensure quality and accuracy, but it can also improve a building’s stability, reduces accidents and promotes a healthier environment.
The GNBS encourages every company and every laboratory to take advantage of its traceable, reliable and affordable calibration services. Stakeholders are urged to submit their measuring instruments for calibration. Service requests can be made by visiting https://gnbsgy.org/metrology/industrial-metrology/. Upon completion of the calibration process, a certificate or report is issued by the GNBS to show that the instrument was calibrated.
To learn more about these and other related services provided by the GNBS, be sure to visit our booth at the upcoming International Building Expo on August 24-27 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara. Our team of experts is prepared to have meaningful engagements with you throughout the four-day event as we strive to create a culture of quality in Guyana.
