Leading With Calibration, Testing Services and Standards For The Construction Sector

As Guyana builds toward a more modern and resilient future, the International Building Expo 2025 returns to the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, from August 14 to 17, under the theme: “The Road to Success: Guyana 2030 and Beyond.” This landmark event brings together key stakeholders in construction, engineering, architecture, and related disciplines to showcase innovations and charts a course towards long-term national development.
Among the agencies leading the charge and participating in the grand event is the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), which plays a vital role in advancing construction excellence through its precision calibration, reliable testing services, and standards for implementation.
Measurement is the silent hero in construction. Whether it is weighing construction materials or testing the compressive strength of concrete, accuracy ensures structures are safe, efficient, and built to last. That is where the GNBS comes in.
As the National Measurement Institute (NMI), the GNBS offers a variety of calibration services through its Industrial Metrology and Testing (IMT) Department, in the areas of Mass, Volume, Temperature, Dimension, Electricity, Torque and Pressure.
Calibration ensures that critical measuring instruments like multimeters, torque wrenches, calipers, ovens, measuring tapes and more, deliver consistent and traceable results. These services are especially important for contractors, laboratories, and regulators seeking to reduce costly errors and uphold structural safety. Crucially, GNBS calibration standards are traceable to internationally recognised NMIs such as NIST (USA) and PTB (Germany).
In construction, quality concrete is non-negotiable. The GNBS provides robust testing services for concrete hollow blocks, cubes, and cylinders, verifying properties like compressive strength, moisture content, and absorption.
For concrete blocks, testing is done in accordance with GYS 215:2018 – Specification for Load Bearing Masonry Concrete Units, applicable to 4″, 6″, and 8″ blocks. Manufacturers can pursue certification, while builders and homeowners can use the service to verify block quality before use.
The Bureau also conducts Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) to assess the integrity of existing structures. This service uses rebound hammer technology to evaluate compressive strength, up to 8,400 PSI, in accordance with ASTM C805, ensuring buildings meet safety expectations and helping to address complaints about substandard construction.
As the National Standards Body, the GNBS also promotes the adoption of National, Regional, and International Standards that support construction quality and resilience. Standards available at the Bureau provide technical guidance on structural safety, flood resistance, vibration tolerance, energy management, materials testing, and more.
Whether you are a contractor, manufacturer, regulator, or homeowner, GNBS has a service or standard for you. Visit the GNBS booth at the International Building Expo to learn more about our solutions for the construction sector. Our team will be ready to answer your questions, offer demonstrations, and help you raise the standard for constructing your next project.
